Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to get up every morning and come to work?

The work we do here actually makes a difference in peoples lives. It seems like such a cheesy ‘Marketing & PR 101’ thing to say, but I’m proud to tell people about what I do at work, and the software we develop.

When you think about it, the Apollo 11 spacecraft only had ~64k memory and a 0.043MHz processor, and we used that to send people TO THE MOON. Imagine what we can do with a modern smart phone to improve the quality of people’s lives.

What is your favourite part about the work culture here at the Centre?

Most established development environments I’ve worked in are dominated by middle aged white men. This is the first team I’ve been involved with that has a good representation of backgrounds and genders. We take for granted how much of a difference this can make in working environment.

Who inspires you? Why?

My partner Jenn inspires me.

A lot of people and especially organizations make big claims about stimulating social change and generating awareness, but at the end of the day, their primary concern is profitability and promoting their own goals. Jenn always makes an effort to empathize with the clients she works with and think critically about the assistance she provides, while expecting no recognition for the work she does. She has overcome a lot of adversity to be where she is now, and I’m proud of her.
