“Quebec’s new e-health records may spur change”

February 3, 2016

What are the implications of Quebec’s adoption of a single electronic health records system for the rest of Canada? In the Canadian Medical Association Journal’s latest news article, our Dr. Cafazzo discusses the significance of Quebec’s decision.

“There was an assumption made that [the software] industry would solve the interoperability problem, but they didn’t because it wasn’t in their interest, so perhaps Quebec’s decision isn’t surprising,” Dr. Cafazzo explains.

Nonetheless, Quebec’s move sends an important signal to other provinces and territories, who may not be able to solve the interoperability problem on their own. Even the government of Ontario, has put a old on purchasing new electronic health record systems because of concerns surrounding the lack of planning and interoperability.

Gathering the opinions of other eHealth leaders in the article, there may be a need to enhance expertise on health information technology within the federal government of Canada in order to tackle the interoperability problem.
